Oscillation Source Location (OSL)

Real-time detection and location of sub-synchronous oscillations in grids with a high share of inverter-based resources

OSL detects oscillations in real time, locates their source, and calculates oscillation frequency and magnitude for alarm, control and trip levels. It uses the Dissipating Energy Flow (DEF) method, which only needs active power, reactive power, voltage magnitude and angle from PMUs. No detailed simulation models of the power plants or the grid are required.
OSL meets the requirements of Transgrid (Australia) for protection systems against unstable operation and has been functionality-tested with Transgrid test data. It can be installed at power plants, substations and transmission lines, or integrated in control centres, and is also available as a module of SmartDSA™.

features

Features

  • Dissipating Energy Flow method using P, Q, V and θ from PMUs
  • Oscillation detection range 0.1 to 25 Hz, in three frequency bands: 0.1–1 Hz, 1–10 Hz, 10–25 Hz (detection up to 25 Hz requires a PMU sampling rate above 50 Hz)
  • Separate magnitudes and two pickup times per frequency band for alarm and disconnection
  • Algorithm repeated every second on a 10-second data window
  • Raw data stored from 10 seconds before to 30 seconds after each event
  • Circuit breaker trip signal and SCADA output signals; remote on/off option
  • Functionality tested with Transgrid test data

Functions

  • Detect sub-synchronous oscillations in real time
  • Locate the oscillation source
  • Calculate oscillation frequency, magnitude and start time
  • Alarm, generation curtailment and trip levels, fully customisable to utility requirements
  • Trip signal to protection and data, alarm and control signals to SCADA
